About Prince Maximilian
The building you see today was completed in 1939. It’s design is attributed to architect Robert H McIntyre, a specialist in hotel architecture of the 1930s.
COMMERCIAL HOTEL – PRINCE MAXIMILIAN HOTEL
The origin of the site 32 Commercial Road Prahran goes back to 1850′s, originally named the Commercial Hotel. It changed hands in 1875 and renamed the Prince Maximilian Hotel. During this period, the owner and chairman of the Maximilian Gold Mining Company, was notorious for holding long and raucous boardroom meeting at the hotel. Around 1890 it was sold and again and return the original name of the Commercial Hotel, which it traded as up until the late 1930′s, when the site was redeveloped and new name was given to the new building – Hotel Max.
HOTEL MAX
The building is a beautiful piece of period architecture. The building we see today was built in the late 1930’s in the Art Deco style of Streamline Moderne. At the time it was about sleek lines, reminiscent of the great ships of the age. It was the Atomic age and electricity was the way of the future, that’s why in this building there are no fireplaces.
