About The Tav
The Tav at Old Bar stood prominently at the entrance of the town, offering a warm welcome to all who arrived. Its beer garden, boasting a size comparable to a rugby field, provided ample space for community gatherings and entertainment.
Within its premises, the Tav offered an array of delights. From smoked barbecue feasts to a wide selection of the coldest beers sourced from various corners of the country, visitors were treated to a tantalizing experience. The staff, known for their warm and friendly demeanor, ensured that everyone felt at home. Meat raffles and live music further added to the vibrant atmosphere, guaranteeing an unforgettable time. The Tav embodied the essence of this remarkable region, showcasing its finest qualities, and eagerly awaited the opportunity to share them with others.
Interestingly, the Tav's location had a connection to local history. Until 1980, the Surf Life Saving Association did not officially recognize women's contributions to the movement. Despite this, the women of Old Bar refused to be deterred and actively participated in rescue and resuscitation efforts. The Men's Club, particularly led by Captain Vic Rushby, provided unwavering support and played a pivotal role in establishing resuscitation classes for women.
The women who demonstrated proficiency in life-saving were awarded qualifying certificates, with the highest achiever receiving the prestigious "Maloney Cup," generously donated by the club's patroness, Mrs. A.A. Maloney. The Old Bar Ladies' Surf Club emerged as a trailblazer, paving the way for resuscitation exams for women.
