Legend has it that back in 1854, the original owners of The Cremorne Hotel installed a small zoo in the rear tea gardens for the amusement of the patrons. The zoo housed many native and exotic animals including Tommy, an Indian elephant. Neighbours of the Hotel were woken daily to Tommy’s wild calls and he soon became very popular with visitors from near and far. A curious and playful character, Tommy was often found roaming the district getting in all sorts of mischief pulling washing off clothes lines, tipping up washing tubs and playing in the water. He brought joy to all those who met him.
